Vienna: Galerie Hubert Winter, 2011.

The Vienna born artist Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003) is one of the most prominent artists of the feminist avant-garde. Based on the emancipatory potential of Surrealism and in dialogue with the socio-critical discourse of her generation, she developed a multilayered and stylistically manifold art.

"Whose heart wouldn't melt in an instant at the sight of these drawings? The simple, figurative motives with their soft shapes, distinct contours and cheerful colours remind the viewer of a pictorial primer, while their almost square format awakens familiar memories of books of fairy tales from childhood days. Yet the bound set of drawings is anything but directed at children. It is the diploma work that twenty-two-year-old Birgit Jürgenssen submitted at the University of Applied Arts Vienna to complete her degree in 1971, thus introducing herself to the world as an independent-thinking artist."
