Light, with life, is perhaps the deepest and most generic of themes. Seeing is reading photo-graphy, "light-writing". Although any vision is impossible without it, from the Fiat lux and Lucifer of Genesis it has been associated with both good and evil, seeing and blindness, reason and mysticism. All reality - in moderns science the relation of matter of energy - may indexed by the square of the speed of light c, as in the Einstein equation e = mc2. Earlier, in the nineteenth century, the physiologist and physicist Ernst von Brücke, Freud's teacher and master at the university in Vienna, helped clarify the relation between light and space. Ernst Mach, the godfather of the Vienna Circle, in his quest for a "unified science", postulated that it was only the way we treated our sensations that determined wheter we are in the realm of physics or that of biology.
