Schuhwerk. Subversive Aspects of „Feminism"
MAK, School of Applied Arts, Vienna
17/03/04 till 06/06/04

Wed, 17.03.2004–Sun, 06.06.2004

In the years between 1973 and 1976 the Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen (1949- 2003) created a small group of works, shoe sculptures and drawings with the title "Schuhwerk" which will be shown complete for the first time. In all some 15 shoe sculptures will be presented, airy experiments for elfin feet which, despite the fragility that some of them radiate, give a strong impression of aesthetic certainty. One might almost talk of shoe dwellings, shoe architectures, that demonstrate a compelling lightness of sculptural being in their filigree construction.

The exhibition will be amplified with an overview of the extensive collection of shoes made by the artist with the same rigor she applied to her art work. Birgit Jürgenssen's substantial oeuvre cannot be fitted into any handed-down category of contemporary art production. Instead, she occupies an exceptional position by revealing manifold networks of relations. mehr
